South Davis Community Hospital Patient Gets His Wish

BOUNTIFUL, Utah, July 8, 2010 –

On Friday July 9, a patient at South Davis Community Hospital (SDCH) will be granted a wish and take the ride of a lifetime. Recently, the 26-year-old expressed disappointment to one of his caregivers about never having ridden on a motorcycle. Within one hour the caregiver called an acquaintance who agreed to help fulfill the dream. The good Samaritans helping to grant the wish are Doug and Julie Rice of West Jordan. The Rices' have a sidecar that has been retrofitted to be handicap accessible. When the patient was first told that he would in fact get to go on a motorcycle ride by using a side car, he asked "what is a side car"; now he can hardly wait to hit the road!
The 20-mile ride will begin in front of South Davis Community Hospital at 10:00 a.m. and will take the group through Davis County from Bountiful to Farmington. The patient, who is a ventilator-dependent quadriplegic residing at SDCH for 24 years, will be accompanied on the motorcycle by the bike owner and his respiratory therapist Zetta Michie, who arranged the ride. The ride is expected to last less than an hour but will certainly leave a lasting memory. Members of the Hospital staff, local physicians, the Great Salt Lake Chapter of the Harley Owners Group, and the Utah Chapter of BACA have been invited to ride in the pack where this lucky young man will be the leader.

Wins Best of State Award

South Davis Community Hospital (SDCH) is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as a
2010 recipient of a Utah Best of State Award. In the Merchandising & Consumer Services category, SDCH was honored for best Health Care Services. The medal was presented at the Best of State gala held on Saturday, May 29th in the Grand Ballroom of the Salt Palace Convention Center.

South Davis Community Hospital is a non-profit specialty care facility devoted to serving the
chronically ill. SDCH is a genuine “community hospital” with over 500 employees offering long term skilled nursing; long term acute care; pediatric transitional and long term care; home health and hospice services; orthopedic rehabilitation; assisted living; and, advanced respiratory services with tracheostomy and ventilator-dependent expertise.

“It is a privilege to be recognized by the Utah Best of State program,” said SDCH C.E.O. David Bland. “This honor is a tribute to South Davis Community Hospital’s dedicated employees and our commitment to provide quality care and compassion to our patients and customers.”

Best of State Awards were created to recognize outstanding individuals, organizations and
businesses in Utah. Each nomination is reviewed by more than 100 judges and is judged on its own merits and against specific criteria for each category.

Taps Local Community Hospital for Charity Event

South Davis County Realtor Association held its First Annual Charity Golf Tournament to benefit the pediatric unit of South Davis Community Hospital (SDCH). The event was held at beautiful Bountiful Ridge Golf Course on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 with 96 golfers participating. The golfers, sponsors, and associates of the realtor association donated over $9,000 for the hospital.

Annie Hedberg, of Prudential Utah Real Estate in Bountiful, organized the event in conjunction with members of the local realtor association in South Davis County. Having experience with caring for her daughter Kailee, who suffered a tragic accident which required extensive medical care, this cause is especially close to her heart. “I was fortunate to have the means to care for my daughter for four years before she passed away from the complications due to her injury. Many of the children at SDCH do not always have direct family involvement. South Davis Community Hospital is a non-profit, independent corporation providing specialty care to kids of all ages, and we wanted to help the children in need.”

“We are honored and humbled that the realtor association selected South Davis Community Hospital as their annual charity” stated David Bland, CEO of the hospital. “It is truly a privilege for me to be a part of a team that is so passionately driven by the mission to care for these kids with complex medical conditions” added Nancy Murphy, M.D., Director of SDCH Pediatric Transitional Care Program.

Candy Grams for Sale!

What is a candy gram? It is a great way to recognize a coworker, manager or another employee! Each candy gram includes a candy bar, a catchphrase and a personal note from you. Give a candy gram to say thank you, great job or thinking of you.

The cost is $1.00 per candy gram

Candy grams can be ordered from the receptionist in each facility building Monday, Aug 24 through Friday, Aug 28.
Plus, there will be a booth in the lobby of SDCH from 11:00am – 1:00pm Monday the 24th.

The candy grams will be delivered to the recipient Aug 31-Sep 4

All proceeds support the SDCH Memory Walk Teams and the goal to raise donations for the Alzheimer’s Association.

We are pleased to announce that SDCH's Board of Directors selected David Bland as our new Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Bland will officially take the helm on Monday, July 6th, 2009.

Visitor Policy Updates

Dear Family Members and Friends,

In an effort to promote the quality of life of our residents and increase campus safety, South Davis Community Hospital recently revised its policy regarding visitors and guests. The changes that have been made to this policy are effective immediately. If you would like a copy of the entire policy, please contact Lisa Pearson: 801-295-2361. Below is a summary of the changes:

Visitors are allowed at any time, unless prohibited by the resident or guardian.
All hospital doors are locked at 7:30 p.m. Visitors who arrive between 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. must come to the front reception doors. Visitors who arrive after 9:00 p.m. and before the receptionist arrives (8:00 a.m. weekdays, 9:00 a.m. weekends) must contact the nurse station and request entrance. Once staff has verified who you are visiting, you will be granted access to the building.
Prior to visiting a resident, visitors must sign in at the nursing desk, indicating their name, the room number they are visiting, and the time that they arrive.
Residents may receive visitors in the resident’s room, open activity rooms, facility lobbies, or in a private meeting room (when requested and available). However, residents may not have visitors in a semiprivate room after 9:00 p.m., unless agreed upon by the roommate and approved by the charge nurse.

Thank you for your support in this policy change. Please share this information with others who may visit your loved one during his/her stay at South Davis Community Hospital. We believe that these practices will protect your loved one while promoting his/her privacy and quality of life. Please let us know if you have any questions.

A Visit From The Doctor

We have some amazing doctors at South Davis Community Hospital (SDCH). SDCH is a sub-acute care hospital and offers services that are different in scope from an acute care hospital. Although daily doctor visits are not likely to occur, our nursing staff is in constant communication with our physicians and will relay any immediate need. Patients will be seen by the doctor as often as needed.

Spring Is In The Air

South Davis Community Hospital and its adjoining facilities, Orchard Cove and Barton Creek have bought spring to their grounds by adding lots of extra color. Since spring is about change and celebrating life and new growth, we wanted to spruce up our grounds with a variety of flowers to bring enjoyment to our residents, their families and our great staff.

New Lobby Look

Renovations for our front lobby are nearly complete after weeks of tearing down wallpaper, patching walls and painting. Thanks to the maintenance department for their countless hours of hard work and dedication. The new color pallette is warm and inviting and gives the whole hospital a new trendy look.

Hospitality Room Available For Families

Just off the front lobby near the fish tank, you will notice our new Hospitality Room. Once a meeting room with a large conference table, the Hospitality Room has been renovated with fresh paint and new furnishings. This room is available to families for the purpose of discussing private matters with hospital staff.

If you need a private place to meet with family, discuss personal matters with a doctor, or fill out hospital paperwork, stop by the front desk and pick up the Hospitality Room key. If you have any questions regarding the Hospitality Room, please contact Cheryl Burton at (801) 397-8088.

Fish Tank Gets a Makeover

Our beloved fish tank will get a long-awaited makeover on May 27th and 28th, 2009. The purple laminate, circa 1980's, will be replaced with a rich Biltmore cherry surround to match our new front reception desk.

The fish tank has been a crowd pleaser for decades and patients and families alike have enjoyed spending time observing the many varieties of salt water fish.

Notes From The Clothes Line

The Laundry Department at South Davis Community Hospital would like to remind family members and friends to please label all personal clothing for patients.

The Laundry Department washes personal clothing for approximately 90 patients and keeping track of all those socks, shirts, pants and PJ's can be an overwhelming task if clothing is not properly marked.

Please write the patients name on the inside collar or waistband with a permanent black marker. If you need a permanent marker, please ask for one at the front reception desk. If you ever have a clothing item that is misplaced, call Maria Tirado, Laundry Supervisor, at (801)397-8116 and give her a brief description of the lost item. No one can hunt down clothing quite like Maria. We appreciate your help in this matter.
